ARLINGTON (AP) - Joe Nathan has turned some of his Texas Rangers teammates into Stony Brook fans.
The Rangers closer is the only major leaguer from College World Series-bound Stony Brook, a Long Island university about 50 miles east of New York City.
Nathan got to watch the Seawolves beat LSU on Sunday night while on a team flight home from San Francisco. Nathan said Monday it was a pleasure and a “pretty cool experience” to be able to watch that game with the Rangers also rooting for his alma mater that plays its home games on Joe Nathan Field.
A shortstop in college, Nathan figures some of his current teammates didn’t even know about the Seawolves a couple of days ago. But he says they were flashing the “O” hand signal like the Stony Brook players did to signify making it to Omaha.
