The Dallas CPAs
The Dallas Cowboys just wrapped up another portion of their offseaon.
Over the past two weeks, I attended all the open practices at Valley Ranch and Cowboys Stadium. With that said, we move from OTA’s to presenting the “Cowboy Practice Awards.”
Best Player – Dez Bryant: The same was the case during last year’s training camp in San Antonio. He was unstoppable in practice then and he is now. From a physical standpoint, he’s a top three wide receiver along with Andre and Calvin Johnson. Word around Valley Ranch is that he FINALLY knows the playbook. As a result, his route running should be improved, which should increase Romo’s trust in a player who MUST have a breakout year.
Laurent Robinson Award – Andre Holmes: He was the first name out of Jerry’s mouth as a replacement for the #3 WR. He’s a 6-4 unknown out of Hillsdale College ($20 if you’ve heard of it). After speaking with Barry Church on Friday, he seems to have impressed many teammates.
Best 1st Impression – Lawrence Vickers: He’s my new favorite Cowboy. He has BY FAR the most fire and passion of anyone in the locker room. He’s the reason Jerry feels as good at fullback since the days of Moose.
Most Overrated Story – Mike Jenkins: I seem to be the only one in DFW that defends him. The NFL is a business and he doesn’t have a future here. Everyone thinks he was pushed out by Carr and Claiborne but it was the absurd Scandrick contract that did Mike in. He’s better than a number three corner and he’s not happy making $1 million this season. The smart play for HIM is to force his way out of town. The smart play for the Cowboys is to force him on the field, even at the cost of losing him next year for free.
Most Underrated Story – Mike Woicik (Strength & Conditioning coach): The man has six Super Bowl rings for a reason (3 with the 90s Cowboys). He was the first one Jerry praised as a difference maker after Friday’s minicamp. The biggest recipient of his offseason program seems to be Dez. Bryant faded in MANY 2nd half games last year. With Woicik on the scene, it doesn’t sound like that will happen this year.
Most Hyped Player – Bruce Carter: Coaches, players and whoever else you speak with at Valley Ranch rave about him. The injury to Dan Connor put Bruce on the 1st team D next to Sean Lee. If the reviews about Carter “jumping off the practice tape” are true, fan-fans will be happy.
