AUSTIN (AP) — The Texas Secretary of State’s office is requesting a federal database of legal immigrants to check against voter registration records.

Agency spokesman Rich Parsons said Wednesday that Texas wants access to the federal government’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements Program. The Department of Homeland Security uses the database to keep track of non-citizens living in the United States.

After initially refusing to share the database, the federal government recently released the database to Florida, where state officials want to use it to make sure non-U.S. citizens living there legally are not registering to vote.

Secretary of State Hope Andrade is responsible for registering voters in Texas. Parsons said that now that Florida is receiving the federal database, Texas also wants a copy to check against the state’s voter rolls.
