WASHINGTON (AP) – The campaigns of Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are gaining a Spanish accent, and it’s no surprise.
Romney’s son Craig is becoming his father’s personal translator. In a television ad, he explains in fluent Spanish that his dad is a man “con grandes convicciones,” or “of strong beliefs.”
The Obama campaign has recycled its 2008 campaign slogan, “Si, se puede,” or “Yes, we can,” for this year’s run, an attempt to retain the Latino support he received the last time he ran.
An official with the National Council of La Raza, Clarissa Martinez de Castro, says language alone won’t win over Latino voters. She says both campaigns need to encourage more Latinos to register to vote and must engage them politically on issues like job creation and the economy.
