University Park Police Searching For Serial Burglar
UNIVERSITY PARK (CBSDFW.COM) – The University Park Police Department is on the lookout for the person who they believe has committed a series of home burglaries in the area.
Since May 16 there have been nine home burglaries on the east side of the city. Police say the break-ins have been in the 2800-3000 blocks of Lovers Lane, Fondren, McFarlin, Dyer and Westminster — near Southern Methodist University.
The burglar has been hitting Monday through Wednesday – usually during specific hours.
“Everybody’s getting out and going to work, so ya know it’s a good time to canvas the neighborhood; while people are at work. So I guess they get started at the first of the week,” University Park Police Officer Lita Snellgrove explained.
The burglaries have primarily happened between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Police also believe they have an idea how the burglar is working, since one person was at home when an attempt was made.
“We believe they’re coming by the homes, right after the homeowner’s gone to work,” Snellgrove said. “Possibly they come to the front door and knock, they don’t get an answer, and then they go around to the back and usually enter the residence.”
The resident that was at home during a break-in attempt scared the burglar away after hearing him break a back window.
Police say the burglar is using force to get inside houses and have been, “mainly looking for jewelry and small electronics.”
The only description police have is of a white man, with dark hair, in his early 20′s. At the time when the suspect was seen he was wearing dark pants, a collared shirt, and was carrying a backpack.
