DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Keeping healthy and safe in the North Texas heat can be challenging. But imagine trying to do it without air conditioning. More than 300 tenants at one North Texas apartment complex are facing that challenge.

All of the residents of the Indigo High-Rise apartment community had their air conditioning turned off Thursday.

The north Oak Cliff community has faced a/c problems for the past three weeks. Management admitted there was a serious problem and determined that in order to perform correct and permanent repairs the entire cooling had to be shut down.

Thursday afternoon it was 95-degres in tenant Mike Freeley’s third-floor apartment. He had floor fans churning and ceiling fans running to try and circulate the air and keep things bearable.

Freeley said he is especially frustrated that he’s had inconsistent air conditioning since he signed a lease and moved in — just three weeks ago.

“My biggest issue with it is that they rented me the apartment on the 13th knowing full well that this a/c wasn’t working,” he said displeased. “Not to make any accusations but, I think that would constitute some sort of fraud.”

The Indigo is an 11-story building with nearly 300 apartment units. The building was once a residence exclusively for senior citizens, but recently started accepting adults and families as tenants.

There were no cool accommodations available for tenants, since air conditioning to the entire building was turned off and off-site accommodations weren’t offered.

A notice posted Tuesday informed residents that maintenance anticipated completing, “this phase of the repair by 5 p.m.” but that time-frame was not guaranteed.

CBS 11 News contacted management at the apartment community and they declined comment.
