WEST COLUMBIA (AP) - In this last remnant of untouched coastal prairie near Houston, the Dr Pepper Snapple Group has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to ensure water quality and quantity for its nearby bottling plant.

It is part of the company’s $1.1 million investment in five Texas watersheds.

Dr Pepper’s project is a small part of what experts estimate is a more than $500 million investment in the last five years by large beverage makers.

Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Miller, MolsonCoors and others have opened their wallets to protect a resource that’s listed as a long-term risk, one they can’t afford to lose. They are investing in water to ensure they have it to make and sell their products for years to come.
