DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas used to be all about J.R. and Southfork Ranch. Now, it’s all about T.D. and The Potter’s House.
T.D. Jakes is one of the most well-known men in the nation. While most people know him as leader of The Potter’s House church in Dallas, Jakes is also a rising star behind the scenes in Hollywood. “Wow, I’m flattered,” he said about comparisons to Larry Hagman’s legendary character. His most recent work is as producer of the highly anticipated movie “Sparkle.”
Although he is a national face of faith, with 30,000 members in his congregation, Jakes is now preaching from a different pulpit as the long-awaited and much talked-about motion picture opens Friday. “Sparkle” stars Jordin Sparks, and is the last film for singer/actress Whitney Houston. “I loved the movie, the original,” he told CBS 11 News, referring to the 1976 version of the film.
This remake is part of the mission — and message — that Jakes continues to spread. “I think ‘Sparkle’ ties into the making of a dream, the tenacity of a young girl, to learn to believe in herself and to fight for that belief. It’s a message America needs to see right now,” Jakes said. While his message is typically one of faith, it is also soaked in the power of possibilities. “We are very selective about the movies we choose to do. They may not always be faith-based films, but they’re always films with a message.”
Jakes and that message have found success well beyond the church, as a media brand with worldwide impact, and a businessman with the power to produce a major motion picture. As he said, “There are more people in the theater than there will ever be in the sanctuary.” And Jakes is also pretty confident that “Sparkle” will shine at the box office.
You could say that he has faith in the film.
