AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Comptroller Susan Combs has unveiled a new website to help Texans better understand whose taxing them and for how much.
The site, Texas Transparency, includes an interactive map of all of the state’s 254 counties. It lets taxpayers explore sales and property taxes collected by the state, county and city or town where they live.
It also tracks other levies from entities like transit authorities or special purpose districts created to collect taxes for projects including infrastructure improvements.
Combs said in an interview Wednesday that many Texans don’t understand how much borrowing their own communities engage in — then have to raise taxes to pay off.
She said the site is part of her office’s continuing effort “saying these citizens are paying everybody, federal, state, county, city.”
