Michael Jackson Sued Again

AUSTIN (AP) - Top education leaders examining charter schools in the Texas Senate are considering tuition vouchers again to allow families more school choice.

Many of Texas’ leading charter school advocates will testify before the Senate Education Committee on Friday. They’re likely to call for increasing the current cap of a maximum 215 charter schools licensed to operate statewide.

Teachers’ groups and other defenders of traditional public schools argue that voucher programs simply make for-profit education companies rich with little regard for classroom learning.

But advocates say charter schools are more efficient and cost-effective than their traditional-school counterparts. They point to lengthy waiting lists around Texas as proof more students want to attend charter schools than the state has space to accommodate.
