DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -The body of a North Texas soldier was returned to his family Saturday morning.

Mesquite native U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jeremie Border  was killed last week when his Special Forces unit was attacked by enemy forces in Afghanistan. The Green Beret was  28-years-old.

Border’s family gathered at Dallas Love Field Saturday morning to witness the formal return of their fallen soldier.

On hand was The Patriot Guard, a group of veterans of previous wars, who helped escort Border’s casket to Restland Funeral Home.

Border a Mesquite High School graduate was part of the 2001 state championship football team. Longtime neighbors say he will be remembered for more than being a football player or a Green Beret. He will be remembered as a true and loyal friend.

Border will be laid to rest Monday.
