FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Chances are, you’re one of the millions in this country with a social media account. There’s no doubt websites like Facebook have changed the way we communicate. They’ve also changed the way we look at ourselves. Doctors say social media has sparked a new trend that they call the “Facebook facelift.”

Allyson Aynesworth is very choosy about the pictures she shares on Facebook.

“It wasn’t until my son actually commented and said, ‘mom, how old is this?’ that I thought maybe I should do something about this.”

Unhappy with the way she looked in her profile pictures, Aynesworth turned to Dr. Jeffrey Adelglass.

“Social media exposes people and what they look like as never before,” says Dr. Adelglass. “We have many people come in actually who put pictures on that are either 10 or 15 years or pounds lighter.”

Dr. Adelglass says the popularity of websites like Facebook has lead to an increase in the number of people seeking procedures to restore a youthful appearance… He calls it the “Facebook facelift.”

Aynesworth wasn’t seeking drastic changes. She simply wanted to turn back time — and remove some of the creases age often causes.

A Facebook facelift can include any number of procedures, but Dr. Adelglass says fillers and injections like botox are most popular with people who are unhappy with how they look in online images. The injections start around 300-dollars and can last between 6 and 8 months.

Many of his patients feel that by putting their best face forward on social media, they’ll look more appealing to employers.

“Many businesses when they get job applicants, they want to know about the person, so they go to Facebook and Linked In, and not only do they read their resumes, they look at their pictures.”

No longer hiding behind an old picture — Aynesworth’s Facebook page is now a true reflection of who she really is.
