GALVESTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - The public has been invited to inspect the latest warship in Uncle Sam’s Navy — one with a Texas twist.
The USS Fort Worth is a littoral combat ship scheduled for commissioning in ceremonies Saturday in Galveston. North Texans will be able to watch the ceremonies live in Sundance Square — click here for details. Until then, the public is invited to board the vessel between 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily through Thursday at Pier 21, 21st Street and Harborside Drive on Galveston’s northern waterfront.
A littoral combat ship is a 21st Century vessel design intended for amphibious assaults on and close to shore. The USS Fort Worth is 390 feet long, 58 feet wide at the beam, is capable of speeds exceeding 40 knots and can fight with a crew as small as 40. It will be home-ported in San Diego.
