DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Believe it or not, the Dallas Cowboys football team does not own the web domain http://www.cowboys.com. But it hasn’t really been an issue, until now.
The website cowboys.com has been re-launched this week as a gay dating website for Western style Cowboys “looking for a man to ride into the sunset with”. The site gives you the option of logging in as a man looking for a woman or a woman looking for a man, but the men looking for men seem to be the target audience.
So, how did the Dallas Cowboys football team lose out on owning cowboys.com?
In 2007, the domain name came up for auction. Domain Name News co-editor Adam Strong says that the Dallas based NFL team did put in a bid that the auctioneers set to be $275,000.
“Post auction, I learned from a couple of sources that the Cowboys organization thought that they were bidding $275.00 for the domain name,” says Strong. Once they learned of the actual price, Strong says that the team backed out of the deal. A group of investors then bought the site for $370,000.
The URL Cowboys.com is set to expire in 2015, and will at that time go back on the auction block. No word on whether or not the Dallas Cowboys football team, whose domain is www.DallasCowboys.com, will try to buy it before then.
