Before fried salsa or fried bubble gum, there was the corny dog -a hotdog dipped in cornmeal batter and deep fried, served on a stick.
The corny dog turns 70 this year. As the legend goes, it debuted at the State Fair of Texas and was invented by the Fletcher’s. The family’s stand still sits in the shadow of Big Tex.
If you tell someone you are going to the Fair, they will inevitably ask you, “Are you going to get a corny dog?” The answer from me is always “Yes, with plenty of mustard.”
I spoke with the two brothers who are keeping the tradition alive.
