DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Five Points and Vickery Meadow area in Northeast Dallas is the scene of the most recent police officer shooting. It is also one of the most populated and most crime-ridden neighborhoods in the city.
More people live in the neighborhood than in the entire city of Addison. Six people per household is the average, with children outnumbering adults four to one.
Lance Hood, who leads the child-centered after school program heart house, says the troubling criminal landscape negatively impacts the people who try to raise their families here.
“This area is referred to as the crime capital of Dallas,” says Hood.
“What you don’t realize is that within the last three weeks, there have been three homicides in the area. We are mile and a half away from NorthPark mall, and nobody understands that. This area needs assistance.”
So far this year, there have been three murders, six sexual assaults, and more than 200-home break-ins within a three-mile radius that defines the area.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown says his department is giving the neighborhood extra attention.
“It’s actually one of our top hot spots. An area we’ve been targeting with extra officers.”
