FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Steven Lawayne Nelson was sentenced to death today for the murder of Rev. Clint Dobson last year at Arlington’s NorthPointe Baptist Church.
Closing arguments concluded Tuesday morning after defense attorneys rested their case. The jury began deliberations just after 10 AM.
After Nelson was sentenced, he broke a sprinkler head in a holding room near the courtroom and caused flooding. Proceedings were over but some people remained in the courtroom. State District Judge Mike Thomas says Nelson somehow broke a sprinkler head in the holding cell. Water slowly started seeping into the courtroom, so deputies ordered everyone out.
On Monday, defense attorneys called Nelson’s mother and other members of his family to testify to a childhood troubled by attention deficit disorder and dysfunctional relationships.
Jurors had the option of sentencing him to life in prison without parole.
