NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) -“Halo 4,” the latest installation of Microsoft’s blockbuster video game franchise, has proven that Master Chief is still king. Microsoft reported that global sales of “Halo 4″ reached $220 million in its first 24 hours on sale.
The popular video game’s opening day beat Hollywood films like “The Avengers” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ which, according to Box Office Mojo, earned about $207 million and $169 million on opening weekends, respectively.
“Halo 4″ is a first-person shooting game that takes place in a dystopian future, where the game’s protagonists, Master Chief and Cortana, face new enemy creatures called Prometheans. The game takes place on the planet Requiem, several years after the events of “Halo 3.”
“Halo 4″ was developed by Microsoft Studio 343 Industries for the Xbox 360. The game is rated M for Mature by the ESRB and has a suggested retail price of $59.99.
