AUSTIN (AP) – Sheldon McClellan came off the bench to score 16 points and grab eight rebounds as Texas beat Sam Houston State 65-37 on Tuesday.
Jonathan Holmes added 11 points and eight rebounds for Texas (4-2), and Julien Lewis had 10 points.
The Longhorns overcame 39.5 percent shooting and 19 turnovers by ruling the paint and making constant trips to the charity stripe. Texas shot 38 free throws and made 28, while the Bearkats were just 5 of 11 from the free-throw line.
Sam Houston State was led by Paul Baxter’s 12 points _ 11 in the first half. Erik Williams had eight for the Bearkats (3-4).
The Longhorns pulled away from Sam Houston State with a 12-0 first-half run and led 28-11 after a 3-pointer by McClellan with 4:30 to play before halftime. Texas earned a 32-18 halftime advantage and held Sam Houston State to 21 percent shooting for the game.
