DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – Dallas Independent School District gave parents a chance to voice their concerns about the system in an open mic night.
Superintendent Mike Miles hosted the hour-long meeting at Spruce High School in Pleasant Grove to take questions from parents.
Miles told the audience, “It’s important for us to hear the questions and concerns, but also talk together about the reform and transformation. It isn’t easy.”
When the hour was over, Melissa Higginbotham, a White High School parent, was satisfied.
“He strikes me as somebody as really committed to kids,” said Higginbotham. “Even though some of the decisions he’s making has been pretty hard on the adults in the system.”
But some parents from Balch Springs Middle School were NOT as satisfied. At least three fights in the last month have broken out on that campus, according to parents who did not want to be identified. The parents want the school to do something about the fight videos being posted on YouTube and Facebook.
The Superintendent, who did not see the videos, told them to talk to the principal.
“I already put my concern with the principal,” said one of the parents. “And I haven’t seen no action about it.”
Some fights in the bathroom, show girls fixing their hair before and after.
Parents are worried the kids and the school are not taking it seriously and that a child could get hurt.
