DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas County Sheriff’s deputies have taken an inmate, who stole a deputy’s gun and escaped from Parkland Hospital, into custody.
The standoff between law enforcement and Franklin Davis, 30, lasted a little more than an hour in a Dallas parking lot, near Reagan and Harry Hines.
After the standoff, Davis was taken from the scene back to Parkland as a precaution, after complaining about chest pains.
According to Dallas County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, Carmen Castro, Davis will face additional charges for escape.
Castro did not have details on how Davis stole the gun or why he was taken to the hospital in the first place.
Davis is facing a capital murder charge for the death of 16 year-old Shania Gray.
In September, Davis was charged with the murder of Shania Gray, who was set to testify against him in a sex abuse trial.
Davis says after he was charged with four counts of sexual assault of a child, he lost his job and began to have disturbing thoughts.
While he maintains he did not sexually abuse Gray, in an interview with CBS 11 News, Davis admitted to luring her from her high school, driving her to a park in Irving and shooting her in the back.
He said, “It wasn’t me who actually came out. It was like a light switch once it hit, a dark side came out of me.”
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Davis.
