Today Winter officially started with the Winter Solstice. If winter is what you are looking for then you’ll get your Christmas wish.
We have some big changes to the weather ahead of us as we count down to Christmas Day. Look at the temperature swings ahead of us. All the numbers are represented: 70’s,60’s,50’s,40’s,30’s….
First off, this afternoon was extremely pleasant. Despite the coldest morning in over a week (25° at DFW) temperatures soared to the mid-60’s by afternoon. That’s a 40-degree swing!
Tonight lows will get down to the mid-30’s under mostly clear skies. For Saturday highs will reach into the mid-60’s again as clouds come in by afternoon while winds pick up. By afternoon it’ll be rather windy, out of the south at 20-25mph.
The countdown to Christmas is looking great for shoppers and travelers into the area:
It’ll be a warm start to Sunday with lows only getting down in the low 50’s. Highs will get into the low 70’s by afternoon. Wow!
A weak cold front comes through Sunday night, only in the mid-50’s with some clouds on Monday.
CHRISTMAS DAY FORECAST
A major winter storm is forecast to sweep across the southern plains and into the Ohio Valley on Christmas Day and Night. We’ll awake on Christmas Day with cloudy skies and light rain. Temperatures will be in the 40’s.
A powerful cold front hits us by afternoon. Winds will turn to the northwest and get up to 30mph. The rain changes over to a mix and then to snow.
I expect that as much as an inch of snow could FALL around the metro area and north. Since temperatures started in the mid-40’s at mid-day the ground will be wet and warm. Temperatures will quickly drop to freezing by end of day but expect just a dusting of snow, perhaps a little more on grassy surfaces or cars.
Winds will be very strong through the night in the Wednesday. Lows will drop down to the mid-20’s with wind chills in the teens. There could be some icy patches on the roads late night and into the morning. Highs on Wednesday will only get into the upper 30’s for a high as the winds diminish with mostly sunny skies.
As we always stress, this is how the forecast looks now. We’ll likely be adjusting this as we get closer. But right now… snow on Christmas! Okay…more just snow-in-the-air but still.
