DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – Baylor Medical Center Dallas performed a record breaking five heart transplants over the weekend.

The hospital typically performs 28-30 heart transplants annually.

Sandra Lee, 67, was one of the recipients.

Just two days before Christmas, she received the call.

“I’ve only been on the list 4 weeks, so it was quite a shock. I didn’t expect it this quick,” she said.

Dr. Shelley Hall, who oversees the transplant program at Baylor Dallas, says transplants are sometimes bittersweet.

“There is certainly a very sad component of heart transplant and that’s the donor,” Hall said. “But what we look at it as, is something positive comes out a sad event that’s giving an opportunity for 1,2,5 or more people to have a new life.”

Lee was a survivor, even before she got the heart transplant.

“It was 20 years ago this month that I had breast cancer, and I’d take chemo and radiation and that caused my heart problem,” Lee said.

For Lee, there is one motivation in her life that keeps her going.

“I have a 5-year-old grandson that lives with me and I wanted to be able to stay alive so I could see him,” she said.

Christmas came early for Lee, who got her transplant on December 22nd, which now signifies her new birthday.

“I get presents twice a year,” she said.

For Lee and other transplant patients, their new hearts mean a new life for the upcoming new year.
