DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – For the second consecutive season, only two Dallas Cowboys were selected for the NFL Pro Bowl. But after a rare omission in 2011-12, Jason Witten is back in the game.
Witten, appearing in his eighth Pro Bowl, joins teammate DeMarcus Ware, who was selected for the seventh straight year.
Despite battling injuries and recording “only” 11.5 sacks on the season, Ware is slated to start at outside linebacker opposite of San Francisco’s Aldon Smith. But it’s unclear if Ware will actually appear in the annual game in January. An injury to his right shoulder could require off-season surgery.
Witten will backup Atlanta’s Tony Gonzalez, who in 16 seasons has been named to 14 Pro Bowls and is the all-time leader in receptions by a tight end (1,237).
Dez Bryant, who has amassed 1,311 receiving yards and 12 TDs, was not selected. Injury replacements and alternates will be announced at a later date.
Dallas’ Jay Ratliff was selected last season for the fourth time.
The game will be played a week before the Super Bowl on Jan. 27, 2013 in Honolulu.
