Texas Tech Beats Florida A&M 70-56
LUBBOCK (AP) – Trency Jackson and Josh Gray each scored 10 points to lead Texas Tech to a 70-56 win over Florida A&M on Monday.
“Any given night you never know who’s going to step up offensively,” Texas Tech coach Chris Walker said. “It just comes down to how well we’re going to do as a team and who’s going to put their body out for loose balls.”
Jordan Tolbert added nine points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Red Raiders (7-4).
“We had stressed that from the beginning of the game, at practice, that we didn’t want them to get 60 points,” Tolbert said.
Dejan Kravic had eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks for the balanced Red Raiders, who had eight players score at least five points.
Jamie Adams led Florida A&M (4-9) with 22 points and five steals. Reggie Lewis added 10 points for the Rattlers.
The Red Raiders trailed until Toddrick Gotcher made a field goal to give them a 20-19 lead with 5:01 left in the first half. That was the only lead change of the game.
Freshman Dusty Hannahs hit consecutive 3-pointers after Gotcher’s basket to help open the lead as the Red Raiders went on a 34-11 run that carried over 3 minutes into the second half.
Jaye Crockett, usually the top scorer for Texas Tech, was held to five points with five rebounds and two steals. Crockett was last week’s Big 12 player of the week.
“You’ve now set an expectation that I look forward to every game,” Walker said of Crockett, relating the importance of leading scorers to their team. “If those guys don’t play to that level, the game is a little bit tougher that night.”
Kader Tapsoba had eight points and three blocks that sparked the crowd at the United Spirit Arena.
“It always feels good to be there for the team when they need you,” Tapsoba said.
Markee Teal and Onyekachukwu Odi led Florida A&M rebounders with six.
Texas Tech shot 39 percent from the field but made 84 percent from the free-throw line. The Rattlers made 53 percent from the free-throw line.
The Rattlers had a 15-11 edge on the offensive boards but the Red Raiders scored 13 second-chance points and held the Rattlers to six. Texas Tech scored 24 points in the paint and limited Florida A&M to 12.
Florida A&M plays Wednesday at Florida International in a nonconference game. The Red Raiders open Big 12 Conference play Saturday at TCU.
“We’ve got to put the 7-4 behind us and focus and see what we can do in the Big 12,” Walker said.
