Baylor Routs Texas Tech 82-48
LUBBOCK (AP) – Pierre Jackson scored 18 points to lead Baylor to an 82-48 win over Texas Tech Tuesday night.
“I shot a lot of shots earlier today,” Jackson said. “…I like the feel of the gym, it felt good every time it left my hands.”
Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin each added 17 points, with Jefferson also grabbing eight rebounds for the Bears (10-4, 2-0 Big 12). Brady Heslip added 11 points.
“I came in knowing that we already have scorers like Pierre Jackson and Brady Heslip,” Austin said of his contribution as a true freshman, “. I’ve been taking my role as a scorer for us too.”
Jaye Crockett led the Red Raiders (8-5, 1-1) with 13 points. Freshman Josh Gray added eight points.
The Bears went on a 24-5 run, led by Jefferson and Jackson, which lasted over eight minutes in the middle of the first half. Baylor used a 22-7 stretch in the second half as they continued to wear out the Red Raiders’ defense.
Jefferson scored 13 points in the first half and Jackson added 12 to put the Bears up 42-23.
Baylor was without head coach Scott Drew, who served the second game of a two-game suspension. Jerome Tang filled in for Drew, who sat out the first two Big 12 games over failure to monitor the sending of text messages and making phone calls beyond the NCAA’s limit.
“I feel like my brother let me borrow his really expensive car and all I wanted to do was bring it back to him with no dents, full of gas,” Tang said.
Baylor shot 57.1 percent from the 3-point line, hitting 8 of 14, while the Red Raiders only connected on 5 of 24, for 20.8 percent.
The Bears took the lead early and spent the rest of the game building on it, handing the Red Raiders their worst loss of the season.
The Bears led by as many as 39 points with 5:38 left in the game. Texas Tech didn’t get a lot closer at the end.
Baylor shot 51.7 percent from the field in the first half, while the Red Raiders shot only 31 percent. The Bears saw improvement in the second half, shooting 55.6 percent, while the Red Raiders hopes continued to dwindle, shooting only 30 percent.
Austin and Jefferson combined to be a force on the inside as the Bears outscored the Red Raiders in the paint 36-24.
Rico Gathers was an asset on the glass, grabbing 11 boards for Baylor. Walton joined Jefferson with eight rebounds.
Heslip went 3 of 4 beyond the arc, while Jackson went 3 of 6, Austin 2 of 2. Baylor won the battle of the boards 41-31 — and 31-19 defensively.
Baylor capitalized more effectively on turnovers, translating theirs into 22 points and limiting Texas Tech to only 11.
“When you play against a team like Baylor, they make you pay for every mistake,” Texas Tech coach Chris Walker said. “That’s what talent does, it makes you pay for every mistake.”
Toddrick Gotcher led Texas Tech in rebounds with seven, while Crockett and Kader Tapsoba each added five. The Red Raiders have seven newcomers on their roster.
