PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – It’s likely armed security will be assigned to all 72 Plano schools in the fall.
But whether it’s a police officer or a private guard will make a difference to some students.
“I feel like the police would have more authority where a security guard is like your average mall cop,” says Plano Sr. High School student Joseph Jackson.
Earlier this week, Plano’s school board expressed public support for hiring security officers to provide a faster response in the event of an attack.
Pete Schulte is a former law enforcement officer and now an attorney. “I think it’s a bad idea. Armed security guards can’t arrest people they can’t detain people they really have no more authority than a citizen in the state.”
In fact, Schulte says security guards are not recognized by the state as licensed peace officers.
“Armed guards seem more like a slightly trained citizen with a gun and they’re kind of more intimidating because I don’t think that’s such a good idea,” says student Dill Naqi.
The school board will vote on hiring security guards at an upcoming meeting.
