ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – Texas Rangers left-handed pitcher Derek Holland was selected to the United States provisional roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
Holland is one of 27 players who were named to the squad on Thursday. The Federation must submit its final 28-man roster, including a minimum of 13 pitchers and two catchers, by Feb. 20.
Holland joins Ryan Vogelsong (Giants), R.A. Dickey (Blue Jays), and Kris Medlen (Braves) in the starting rotation. The provisional roster consists of 15 MLB All-Stars, three Most Valuable Players and one Cy Young Award winner.
The squad will begin first-round play as part of Pool D at Chase Field in Phoenix, from Friday, March 8, through Sunday, March 10. In Pool D with Team USA are Canada, Mexico and Italy.
Joe Torre is set to manage the team. Greg Maddux, who is a special assistant to the GM in Texas, will serve as a pitching coach for the team.
In 2012, the left-hander tossed 175.1 innings, compiling a 4.67 ERA and a 12-7 record.
