FOXBOROUGH (AP) – The New England Patriots defense cut down on allowing long completions as the season went on. The Baltimore Ravens never stopped making them.
The Patriots (13-4) know they must keep Joe Flacco from connecting on deep throws to Torrey Smith, Anquan Boldin and Jacoby Jones in Sunday’s AFC championship game.
Those wide receivers have combined for 13 catches that gained 40 or more yards this season. The longest was by Jones, whose 70-yarder with 31 seconds left enabled the Ravens (12-6) to tie the Denver Broncos and then beat them 38-35 in two overtimes in last Saturday’s divisional playoff game.
In their first game against the Patriots this season, the Ravens had five completions of at least 25 yards and won 31-30 in Week 3.
