FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A fast-moving fire swept through a northwest Fort Worth stable early Monday, killing at least 11 horses and injuring several others, authorities said.

Heavy flames were showing when Fort Worth firefighters first arrived at the scene along 31st Street and Robinson Street around 2:30 a.m.

Rescue efforts got underway and eight horses were saved, but officials report three of the animals were hurt. Among the injured horses were a mare and her foal; the third injured horse is not expected to survive.

Officials said the fire also created a problem with blowing embers and grass fires.  As a result, a second alarm was called to deal with the grass fire threat.

One firefighter was treated at the scene for minor burns to his hands as he worked to free the horses closest to fire.

Two pieces of machinery, a trencher and a skid loader, and two other vehicles were destroyed by the fire.

A Fort Worth Police officer initially spotted the flames and smoke from the fire from roughly a mile away and reported it.

Investigators are on scene to try to determine what caused the fire.
