AUSTIN (AP) - Texas Democrats want immigration back in the conversation at the Capitol as the White House and Congress propose new paths to citizenship for an estimated 11 million people in the U.S. illegally.

State Reps. Rafael Anchia and Ana Hernandez Luna on Wednesday will call for the Legislature to pass a resolution urging leaders in Washington to enact immigration reforms. In his State of the Union, President Barack Obama asked for an immigration bill within the next few months.

The Texas Legislature has been conspicuously silent as immigration has returned to the political forefront. Majority Republicans haven’t resurrected contentious immigration bills that roiled the statehouse in 2011.

Texas has more at stake than most states in the immigration debate, with nearly 2 million illegal immigrants and a 1,200-mile border with Mexico.
