ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Local organizations are demanding answers from the Arlington Independent School District after a junior high school teacher was suspended earlier this month. A student claimed that the teacher poured pencil shavings into his mouth, and now groups want to know why that teacher was not fired.

According to 13-year-old Boles Junior High School student Marquis Jay, the teacher walked by while he was seated, tilted his head back and poured the pencil shavings into his mouth. CBS 11 News spoke with Jay about the incident. Right after it happened, Jay said, he spit out the pencil shavings and went to the school’s nurse to fully rinse out his mouth.

Jay said that the woman was not his assigned teacher, but rather a helper in his classroom that January day.

The head of the Texas Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Fort Worth is insisting that the teacher be fired, saying that a suspension is not enough. The group’s leader is expected to meet with Arlington ISD officials at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, along with representatives from LULAC and the NAACP.

In the meantime, the Arlington ISD said that the incident was unacceptable and they launched their own full investigation.

“She said sorry for what happened,” Jay told CBS 11 News. “She wasn’t thinking right.”
