WACO (AP) - Baylor University is facing a backlash from residents surprised by the purchase of dozens of vacant lots by the university as it prepares for a new football stadium in Central Texas.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports neighbors expressed concern Monday that a push may be under way to rezone land near the stadium. The Waco campus is about 95 miles south of Dallas.

Residents say the university may disrupt the residential nature of the area by using its clout to allow other development.

University officials have said they have enough land for the stadium and its parking needs and have no specific plans for the purchased land. The stadium will hold 45,000 spectators, with the option to expand to 55,000.

It’s scheduled to open on campus in August 2014.
