AUSTIN (AP) - A small group of demonstrators chanting “more funding now!” has gathered in front of the Texas Capitol to call for restoring $5.4 billion in cuts to public education approved by the Legislature in 2011.
The advocacy group “Save Texas Schools” has begun an online petition calling for rolling back the funding reductions passed two years ago. It organized Wednesday’s gathering.
Save Texas Schools expects thousands of students, teachers, parents, school administrators and community activists to gather at the Capitol on Saturday as part of its larger, annual rally in Austin.
Meanwhile, a group of lawmakers from both parties in the state House are discussing the possibility of restoring as much as nearly $1 billion to public education without exceeding spending limits in the current Texas budget.
