ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – Gone are the days when the sight of a Josh Hamilton Rangers jersey brought smiles to the faces of Rangers fans. The hard-hitting Rangers turned Angels player now turns Rangers fans stomachs.
“So, what do you think when you see somebody walking around with one of these on?” CBS11 asked fans while holding up a Hamilton jersey.
“Disappointment,” fan Hunter Wistrand said. “Highly disappointed.”
“It looks like a nice handkerchief,” said fan Brandon Holmes.
And the old Hamilton jerseys aren’t exactly flying off the rack — even at half price at the ballpark! Especially after he said this to CBS11’s Gina Miller: “There are true baseball fans in texas, but its not a true baseball town.”
“I thought, ‘Wow! Why is he even making comments like that?'” Holmes said.
So 15-year old Holmes started an online campaign asking fans to greet Hamilton’s return to Rangers Ballpark with dead silence. That’s because Hamilton also told Gina – “The people who really get it will cheer. The people who don’t will boo.”
“I really want to try it after Josh made the comment the good fans will cheer him and the bad fans will boo him,” Holmes said. “So why not go in the middle and not do anything?”
Holmes has even designed shirts with ‘Baseball Town since 1972’ on them. He’s received a lot of feedback; 1500 Facebook likes in just a couple of days. And who can resist posting a comment when he’s got a picture of former Rangers Pitcher C.J. Wilson high-fiving Hamilton?
“One of my favorites says high five if you’re an overpaid, egocentric player,” Holmes laughed.
With that kind of animosity, can fans hold back their boos when Hamilton returns as an Angel? Wistrand said no.
“I would boo him at that point,” Wistrand laughed. “I would love every minute of it!”
