NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – It’s that time of year again!  This weekend time will officially change — meaning we set our clocks forward and lose an hour of sleep. Now there’s proof that hour can cause big changes in everything from health and mood, to retail spending.

According to sleep specialist Dr. Paul Ingmundson, the one-hour time difference can greatly affect hormones and maybe even overall energy. “Spring forward is much more difficult for us than falling back,” he said. “It has more adverse effects on people’s alertness, as well as on their health. Some people may take 7-10 days to really get used to resetting their biological clocks.”

One way to try and acclimate yourself to the change is to go to bed early tonight, to get ready for the spring forward.

Heart disease is already the leading cause of death for both men and women and CBS News Medical Contributor Dr. Holly Phillips says Daylight Saving Time cold aggravate an existing condition. Dr. Phillips said the first week after clocks spring forward, “There’s a five-percent increase risk of heart attacks. When we put the clocks back, in the fall, heart attacks decrease. It really has to do with inflammatory factors in the blood. Just losing that one hour of sleep makes us more likely to have a heart attack.”

The first Monday morning after Daylight Saving Time begins has statically also been dangerous for commuters. “On Monday morning there are going to be six- to 17-percent more motor vehicle accidents,” quoted Dr. Ingmundson. “Some of that may be due to changes in lighting, but some of it is due to people just not [being] as alert as they would be.”

But the time change brings good news when you look at it in relation to business. According to Michael Downing, author of the book Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time, pushing the click up bodes well for retailers. “If you give Americans daylight at the end of the workday they’re more apt to shop on the way home,” he said.

Regardless of your health, daily commute or chance for financial prosperity, Daylight Saving Time is going to occur in Texas. So don’t forget to set your clock ahead Sunday at 2 a.m.
