COLLEGE STATION (AP) – Some fan areas at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field have become the offseason home to thousands of roaming Mexican free-tailed bats.

Pest control experts since December have been installing nets over about 40,000 square feet of concrete public areas.

Randy Lee with RP Lee Termite & Pest Control says the nets allow bats to get out of areas but not return. Company workers on Saturday put up more netting.

Parts of Kyle Field have had the furry creatures on and off for years and efforts were made to remove bat waste. Lee says the growing bat population has raised sanitation issues.

A&M associate athletic director Kevin Hurley puts the eradication and cleanup cost at about $100,000. The netting will remain in place during upcoming stadium renovations.
