High School Students Surprised With 4-Year Scholarships
DESOTO (CBS 11 NEWS) – Millions of dollars in college dreams came true in DeSoto Tuesday. Officials with Texas Christian University (TCU) surprised seven students from DeSoto High School with four-year scholarships.
“This is a full-ride scholarship to Texas Christian University, to TCU, valued at $200,000 a piece,” explained Timeka Gordon, director of the Community Scholars Program.
The 2013 scholarship winners include Kayla Adams, Ke’Arrius Brunson, Ernest Dominick, Ogagaoghene Emeyo, Micah Jennings, and Brianna Neal-Gipson.
Winners were chosen for their leadership skills, active engagement in school activities and/or athletics, and strong academic accomplishments.
The students applied in November and news about who had won was kept secret until Tuesday morning.
“This scholarship means so much to me because I have a younger sister,” said future broadcast journalism major, Ernest Dominick. “My parents have to only pay for one collegiate education, that’s a blessing in itself. I feel I’m giving back to them for all of the time they put into my life. I’m able to give this back to them and say ‘You don’t have to worry about it. I’ve got this!'”
Since joining the program four years ago, 23 DeSoto High School students have been awarded TCU Community Scholarships.
