DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) -Most people, age 85, are just happy to be alive.

A great grandmother in Denton shows, not only is she alive but alive and kicking and doing the splits.

Those very talents came in handy when she was called upon to help her 17-year-old great granddaughter Tori Olson.

The question was who would stand with Olson, a senior at Denton High School, during the mother/daughter dance at the annual “Fillies Follies” dance review.

“My mother passed away when I was 12. She got sick, probably when I was one or two,” Olson said.

She didn’t have to look far.

Her grandmother, Terri Reeves, stood in. But that’s not all. Her 85-year-old great grandmother, Ruth Vogel, not only stood in, she did a high kick and the splits.

“Crowd went wild,” Olson said.

It turns out, Ruth Vogel has been in step with the world since she was a little girl.

She became a professional dancer until the ripe old age of 36. By then, she’d already given birth to six children.

“After six kids and 22 grand kids and 32 great, why, you remember the years of dancing fondly. But, you thought, ‘Well, that’s in the past.’ So, being in Fillies Follies was great. It was fun,” Vogel said.

Once a dancer always a dancer. She never lost it. She finds time to stretch five days a week.

She easily threw her right leg up to the high back of her husband’s easy chair to stretch out.

And she happily demonstrated her ability to do the splits again in her living room.

Her great granddaughter said, “Every time I come over to her house she says, ‘Now, I’m not old yet if I can kick eye high.’ And she’ll do her little kick. And, ‘If I can kick into a good split.”

During those brief moments back in the spotlight, Vogel wasn’t even nervous.

“I will have to say, I’m a ham at heart and I enjoyed every bit of it,” she said with a laugh.

It was as if she’d been doing it all her life. Because she had.

Tori Olson’s friends are still talking about her great grandmother’s moves.
