DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas police have made two arrests in connection with the murder of a 79-year-old woman who was found dead in her home.
Police found the back door to Avanell Cowgill’s home open on March 9, when they made a welfare check at her home in the 11300 block of Earlywood Drive in the Lockwood neighborhood. It was determined she had been brutally murdered two days before.
Police say David Herron, 29 and Daniel Brooks, 28, committed the murder and stole Cowgill’s purse and credit cards. Surveillance video later showed them trying to withdraw money from Cowgill’s ATM account and using her credit cards to buy electronics at Walmart.
Detectives were able to learn the name of one of the suspects after they tracked down where the stolen electronics were sold. Police later determined both men were already locked up in Richardson jail, stemming from a March 20 theft arrest.
Herron and Brooks will be booked into Lew Sterrett Justice Center and charged with capital murder. Their bond has been set at $1 million.
