DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The man who had been the voice of the State Fair icon Big Texas tells 1080 KRLD that he will no longer be welcoming patrons to the fair.

Bill Bragg, who was the voice of Big Tex since 2002 tells KRLD he was informed that his contract was not renewed effective Tuesday.

“I’m just shocked”, said Bragg. “I’ve done everything I can over the last 11 years to be the best that I could be for the State Fair of Texas. I’ve grown up here in town and I’ve gone on the midway for the last 66 years.”

Bragg says since the fire burned down Big Tex in October 2012 there has been a tense relationship with the Fair organizers.

Sue Gooding with the State Fair released a statement saying “The talent contract for the voice of Big Tex is handled on a year to year basis.  A contract agreement requires both parties to abide by the terms of an agreement. Bill Bragg will not be offered a talent contract this season.”

And the search for a new voice is already on,  just as the State Fair is working to rebuild Big Tex in time for this fall’s event.

“I was planning on doing this for the rest of my life, ” said Bragg “I just don’t know what to say. I’m just shocked, dismayed and brokenhearted.”
