AUSTIN (AP) - Rocker Ted Nugent is challenging proposed legislation that would change how breeders handle white-tailed deer.

In a spirited address Wednesday to the Texas House Committee on Culture, Recreation & Tourism, the avid hunter commented on freedom, spirituality and hunting ethics.

The Waco, Texas-area resident is best known as the guitarist behind 1970s hits like “Cat Scratch Fever.”

Under present law, breeders can release deer within 10 days of the start of hunting season. The proposal would give the deer more time to acclimate to the wild before hunters open fire.

State Rep. John Davis, a Houston Republican, says his bill would improve how the public perceives hunting. But Nugent said the bill was unnecessary because hunting involves “an individual ethical choice.”
