NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – Most North Texas youngsters are familiar with line, “I’m gonna pop some tags. Only got $20 in my pocket.” It comes from the popular song “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

The song is about finding bargain priced clothes, from secondhand stores, to wear to a party. Those lyrics will become a prom season reality thanks to Goodwill of Fort Worth.

Dresses from Cache, Alfred Angelo, and White House/Black Market can easily go for around $100 at the mall, but at Goodwill’s prom sale they’ll be up for grabs from between $5 and $25.

Sophie Hemphill is a bargain shopper and believes she has found a good deal at Goodwill. “I can go to a boutique and get something like this for a lot of money or come here and get something unique that no one else has for cheap,” the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts senior said.

Hemphill spent Tuesday morning browsing the racks before the big sale on Friday. She found a purple gown that she hopes to ‘rock’ the prom in. “I think this one is $24, which is absolutely fabulous. A really good price.”

All of the dresses for sale are in good condition. According to Goodwill, most were only worn once before being donated. Goodwil Fort Worth director of special projects Kristen Bostick said the organization has a very clear goal. “We want everyone that comes in to possibly walk away with something wonderful to make their night special.”

That special night includes a special prize for one lucky high school girl. Goodwill is holding a raffle for a chance to win a prom beauty package, including complimentary hair and makeup services to be used the night of her prom.

And for those who have any doubts about thrift shopping, take note: “I suggest people put their reservations away about finding something at Goodwill because you’re going to find a gem,” Bostick said. And you can save a pretty penny while you’re at it.

The Goodwill prom sale event happens Friday, April 19. It’s being held at the Goodwill location at 2100 Altamesa Boulevard and will run from 5-9 p.m.
