DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) – While most Texas Rangers players delight in the opportunity to visit historic Wrigley Field, Lance Berkman is anything but excited about the team’s trip to Chicago this week.
“Chicago’s one of the worst places in baseball…really for anything,” said Berkman on Monday to the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
Berkman reiterated his opinion of the ballpark with 105.3 The Fan’s Elf & Slater — and he provided insight into why.
“Well probably some of that is based on my lack of success here. A lot of times, players base their feelings towards a ballpark on whether or not they like to hit there. It’s nothing personal against any of the fans or the people of Chicago, but I think I am a career .210 hitter here or something like that.”
The historic venue, which was first opened in 1914, is one of the most revered venues in all of sports. But Berkman wouldn’t lose any sleep if the park ceased to exist. In fact, in his comments on Monday, he volunteered to be the trigger man should the park be destroyed.
“I just figured, there are so many people that have a sentimental attachment to this place, they might have a hard time finding someone that would do it,” Berkman explained to Elf & Slater. “I’m just putting it out there that I would do it.”
Though Berkman does enjoy some of the features of the park — like the ivy on the outfield wall and the old-school feel of the park — his reviews of the park are largely negative.
With the lack of a DH in the National League park, Berkman doesn’t expect to play in the series. But that doesn’t mean that Cubs’ fans will give him a break.
“You’re going to draw ire from Chicago Cubs fans if you’re on the other team anyway. I’m sure they don’t take kindly to someone disparaging their shrine. Like I said, it’s not personal.”
