AUSTIN (AP) - A Texas House education panel plans to take up — and could approve — a key proposal to expand the number of charter schools allowed to operate in Texas.

Senate Bill 2 has already passed the state Senate. It would gradually raise the cap on the number of public charter school licenses the state issues from 215 to 305 over the next six years.

It also makes it easier for authorities to shutdown poor-performing charters.

The House’s Public Education Committee first discussed the measure last week.

Chairman and Killeen Republican Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock says he hopes the committee will vote to refer the measure to the full chamber during its meeting Tuesday.
