DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Southern Methodist University and neighboring Stonewall Jackson Elementary were briefly placed on lockdown Friday morning as Dallas police searched for a suicidal man in the area.

An SMU alert text message and tweet were initially distributed to all staff and students at 9:06 a.m. alerting them of the situation.

The university’s website reported just after 9:15 a.m. that the suspected had been detained and the lockdown lifted. The suspect was in possession of two small pocket knives when arrested.

Dallas police say the incident began around 6:00 a.m. when officers were dispatched to the 6000 block of Melody Lane regarding a man who threatened to kill himself. Officers made entry into the apartment, but the caller was gone.

A suicide note was located inside the apartment that indicated the caller was a danger to himself and possibly others.

Officers determined that the suspect was on foot and alerted SMU and Stonewall Jackson Elementary as a precaution. Both schools were placed on lockdown.

Officers located the caller at approximately 9:10 a.m. in the 5400 block of Mockingbird Lane and placed him into custody without incident.

A witness reports seeing the suspect tased and arrested on Mockingbird Lane in the Jason’s Deli parking lot.

The school reports that there were no injuries as a result of the incident.

The university says that final exams will begin at their regularly scheduled times, 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Students who missed exams scheduled prior to 11:00 a.m. will need to work with their professors.
