AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — The Texas Lottery says a man who lives in a small North Texas town has claimed a $40 million Powerball jackpot.

Paul McDowell visited Texas Lottery headquarters in Austin Tuesday to claim the jackpot from the May 29 drawing. For the drawing that night, Texans alone spent more than $26 million on Powerball chances — some $2 million an hour. McDowell’s winning ticket is the first Powerball jackpot to be claimed in Texas since the Texas Lottery joined the multi-state game in 2010.

McDowell chose the cash value option, so his prize was almost $25 million before taxes.

He lives Ravenna, population about 200. He bought ticket at a convenience store in nearby Bells. The store is eligible for a $400,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Ravenna is about 80 miles north of Dallas.

His quick pick ticket was the only ticket sold to match all five numbers drawn — 9 – 14 – 17 – 49 – 57 — and the Powerball — 2.
