DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - HBO and James Gandolfini’s managers both confirm that the actor has died in Italy at the age of 51 of a possible heart attack.

Gandolfini was reportedly on vacation at the time.

Gandolfini made his Broadway debut in the 1992 production of Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire,” alongside Jessica Lange and Alec Baldwin.

His film debut was in Sidney Lumet’s “A Stranger Among Us” in 1992 but his breakthrough role was an appearance as Virgil the hit-man in the 1993 movie “True Romance.”

He will best be remembered as mobster boss Tony Soprano in the famed HBO series “The Sopranos,” which ran from 1999 through 2007. He won three Emmy Awards for his work in the series.

He recently appeared in “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.”

Gandolfini, who was an avid supporter of the US military Veterans, produced a documentary for HBO titled Wartorn: 1861-2010, which detailed America’s major wars and the affects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on the soldiers who fought in each war.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Lin, a son and a baby daughter.
