NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Good news for some military veterans… as a part of the College Credit for Heroes (CCH) program, service to your country can now translate into college credit hours.
The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has teamed up with a number of Texas community colleges to that have created a set of standards that equates military and training experience into college and certification credits.
“This is something that allows us to standardize experience for veterans and give them college credit for that experience; giving them a leg up really in getting a certification, on the way to a career,” explained TWC spokeswoman Lisa Givens.
In 2011 Governor Rick Perry signed the $3 million workforce development initiative as a way to recognize “the exceptional knowledge and skills gained by military service members.”
According to the TWC, there are some 25,000 Afghanistan and Iraq veterans who return to Texas every year, making the Lone Star State the current home for 1.8 million veterans.
Through the CCH program veterans are earning an average of about 30 credit hours. “When you think about the time they’ve spent away, this really gives them an opportunity to get started on a career and hopefully make their transition easier and really be able to reconnect with the workforce,” Givens said.
As it stands, most of the applicable college credit hours are for those seeking degrees and certifications in allied health careers. Givens says it helps American service-people because, “They’ll [veterans] be able to translate those skills and have employers understand their experience, so that they can identify the good fit that they are for the jobs they [employers] are offering.”
There are currently about a half-a-dozen community colleges that have joined the program and partnered to offer the credits.
