Just How Unusual is this July Chill

By Chief Meteorologist Larry Mowry

High temperature has bumped up to 74 at DFW as of 6pm.  This still makes this day very rare.  But now of the 3,518 days of records for the month of July only 6 have seen high temperatures at or below 74 degrees.

You just don’t see this very often!  The chill we are seeing today is really incredibly rare.  The high temperature today will only be in the 70s.  This will be the first time in 16 years where the high temperature has only been in the 70s during the month of July.

The last time we had a high in the 70s was on July 6, 1997 when the high was 76 degrees.

As of 420pm, the high temperature today at DFW has been 73 degrees!  If this holds, this will be only be the fourth time since records have been kept where a July high temperature has been 73 degrees or colder.

To put this in more perspective, July records have been kept since 1899.  That is 113 years of data.  That equals 3,518 days of data for the month of July.  Of those 3,518 days, only 4 have had high temperatures 73 degrees or cooler!  Just incredible.

The coldest July Days are as follows:

July 4, 1924 – 71 degrees

July 9, 1905 – 73 degrees

July 12, 1945 – 73 degrees

July 15, 2013 – 73 degrees
